Group meeting 29th October 2013

Here are some main points about our last meeting..

  • We choosed the three tools which we are going to use during this project. They are:
1) Personas
2) User diary -> All the members of the group write a user diary for a week. Also we create a survey about radio listening which we send via Facebook to our friends. Every member of the group should get twenty answers.
3) Brain storming -> This tool we are using during our every meeting.

  • The group has got many ideas and questions about the theme "Radio in the Future":
    • customizing -> every radio listener could create an own channel
    • social medias will have a significant impact on radio
    • Future´s radio listener is more active and has possibilities to affect
    • 24/7 possibility to listen to your favourite music
    • lifestyle channels for different kinds of groups
    • cars´ technological solutions, smart phones
    • applications for the radio, podcasts´ possibilities
    • commercials -> are the people ready to pay for music in the future?

  • Our group also decided to open a Twitter account!

Laura's presentation and portfolio

Hi!

I'm your new team member Laura Kantola, 20 years old. I study Beauty Care Management in Turku University of Applied Sciences. I have lived in Turku for two years. First time I visited here was when I had entrance examination. I came from Nivala which is a little town near Kokkola and Oulu. I travel there always when it's possible, because my boyfriend still lives there. I graduaded high school 2011 and next autumn I began my studies here. I love to visit Nivala because there lives many very important people for me but I think Turku is an amazing place to live. I feel at home also there.
When I have free time, I go to gym, jogging or see my friends. In Turku there are so many nice places where we can spend time together. Listening to music is also one of my hobbies. I often listen to radio as well as Spotify. Music has always been a part of my life: I have played cello for many years, and taken dance lessons.
I'm excited about working with you at this interesting project!

What do you know about the theme of your project?

Our goal is to find different ways how music can be listened in the future. Digita Radio wants us to figure different scenarios so it could be prepared. It wants to be one step ahead of its competitors or at least keep up with them.

What do you know about your company?

Digita transmits radio and TV programmes. Its broadcasting network covers the whole of Finland. Also wireless transfer and data are included in its services. It wants to guarantee good audiability of the service and disturbance-free way of transfer.
At the moment company is a market leader in distribution of radio content in Finland. However, radio business is changing and company needs to develop technology and create new solutions so that it can be always and everywhere.

What do you know about the company's customers?

Digita's clients are television and broadcasting companies as well as mobile and broadband operators. Yle radio channels,The Voice and Radio Nova are Digita's well-known customers.

Company's customers are also radio listeners. It's important to figure out how and where they would like to listen to music.

What do you know about the industry of the company?

I didn't know anything about this industry before. Now that we have discussed with our group and I've done some research about Digita and radio industry, I think I'm beginning to understand at least something.
Finnpanel's research reveals that 3,8 million Finns listen to radio every day, circa 3 hours per day. We are hearing radio in many places even if we didin't put it on ourselves: at the stores, at the hairdresser's, at a gym, on a bus... Though, more and more people are listening to music via other services. Radio has new competitors all the time. Media industry is developing extremely quickly. I think that at this project we won't focus on today's radio business but it's future.

What do you know about the competitors of the company?

There are increasingly new music services like Spotify, iTunes and Nokia Music +. They are different to radio with having no radio announcer or commercials. Besides, people can choose which songs they want to listen to. Nowadays it's easy and quick to check the latest news or weather with smartphone so hearing them on radio isn't so necessary anymore.

Marica´s portfolio

So here are my answers for the five questions...

What do you know about the theme of your project?

We are doing our project for the company called Digita with title " Radio always and everywhere".  Our goal is to innovate and create new ideas which could be useful for this company and especially for its business and services which are aimed for radio channels.

What do you know about your company?

I had heard something about Digita before our project but still its field of business wasn´t familiar to me. The company´s web pages (http://www.digita.fi)  are full of useful information about the company.  There is said that Digita is "responsible for national transmission and broadcasting networks as well as for the radio and television stations. The broadcasting network covering the whole country comprises 36 major stations, 101 sub-stations and dozens of transmission link stations."

What do you know about the company's customers?

Company´s customers are other companies, which produce  for example TV and radio programmes - in other words its customers are media and information technology companies. For example some commercial radios are Digita´s customers - like Radio Nova.

What do you know about the industry of the company?

The industry of Digita requires very good technological expertise and capacity to provide tools which are needed while being responsible for national transmission and broadcasting networks. But also skills of marketing and customer service, co-operating with customers are important.

What do you know about the competitors of the company?

Digita probably  is the leading company in its field in Finland but for example companies DNA and Anvia have also provided same services as Digita for television stations.

Hi!
My name is Essi Hautaluoma and I’m 25 years old. I study Beauty Care Management in Turku University of Applied Sciences. I come from Seinäjoki and I moved to Turku two years ago. I'm also graduated as a beauty therapist and while studying I work in a beauty salon.

When I have time I go to gym and often I meet my friends in cafes and restaurants. I love travelling and see the world, and I spent my last spring in Thailand as an exchange student. It was the best time of my life, and I recommend exchange studies for everyone!

What do you know about the theme of your project?

Our company, Digita Radio, want us to innovate something for them, because they want to be always and everywhere. We don’t actually know yet what that might be but we’re planning to do something great during these weeks. We getting know the company before we are going to spend couple days in Kunstenniemi, and there we have time just for innovation.

What do you know about the company’s customers?

Digita Radio’s customers are radio channels, like Voice and Radio Nova. Also YLE is important customer for them.

What do you know about the industry of the company?

This industry is totally new for me, and I don’t have the overall picture of it. I hope I understand this better when we discuss with the group and start working with Digita.

What do you know about the competitors of the company?

I think the biggest competitors for Finnish radios and for Digita is Spotify. In Spotify you can listen radio or create your own playlists. People who want to hear also speech listen radio, but most of the young people want to hear just music.

Helenas presentation and portfolio

Hello everyone!

I am Helena and I study international marketing in Åbo Akademi. I am not from Turku but I have been living here for almost 6 years so I feel quite at home here. I am originally from the archipelago, the island Korpo, some 2,5-3 hours from Turku.

This is my fourth year in Åbo Akademi. I have really enjoyed it but now it is fun to do something different than our normal theoretical courses.  I am really looking forward to working with this project.

I have done the first half of the portfolio. It was good to start with this, so we get more familiar with the company and our theme.

What do you know about the theme of your project?

We are working with the company Digita Radio and our theme is always and everywhere. Digita is an business-to-busniess company which mean that they operate differently than business-to-consumer companies, which we also will have to take into consideration when we work with Digita Radio.

I have thought about the theme in a SWOT-context, and thought about the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats that Digita Radio may face.  One strength for radio is localism. You get local news easily. You can listen to radio in the car, at home, from your phone, on the web… it is a very easy way to listen to music and obtain news.  Radio is often thought of as old school, which I don´t know if it is a strength and opportunity or a weakness. Sometimes old schools become retro and pop again.

New technology may be a threat, but it may also be a opportunity since radio is quite easily adapted in comparison to other media, for example news papers. Threats are of course also competitors. This SWOT-model is something that I would like to think more about and elaborate later on in the course.

What do you know about your company?

Digita is a completely new company to me. I have never even thought about that there need to be a company like Digita. But it is fun to learn new things! J

I have learned that Digita broadcasts radio and TV programs in all of Finland and also some abroad. Digita develop and supply versatile Internet, TV and radio services. They have some 250 employees.

What do you know about the company's customers?

Digita has several domestic radio customers for example Radio Nova and Sävelradio. They also stream online.

This is absolutely one aspect of Digita that we need to look more into. If we are going to think about innovating Digita we need to know more about their customers!

What do you know about the industry of the company?

Here I need to say the same thing as before. The company and the branch are completely new to me and I believe it will take a long time to understand how this really works.  Should we then maybe focus on if Digita should contact the end consumer directly? Many B2B-companies use both pull and push strategies, and maybe Digita could benefit from both marketing to their customers and their end consumers? This is also something we need to talk more about with our team.

What do you know about the competitors of the company?

The competitors are of course other companies that broadcast radio programs, but also other programs where you can listen to music and news. For example Spotify and iTunes are competitors, also other radio channels that you can listen to on the web that Digita does not stream.

Tools

We still have a lot to discuss and plan, and I definitely believe that brainstorming will be one of our tools that we will use during this course! Personas were obligatory, and hopefully  we will tomorrow talk more about which tools we want to use in the team.

Maxime Presentation

Bonjour à tous !
My name is Maxime and I am a French student in exchange in Turku until December.I am 21 years old and I am in business school in Troyes in France. My school here in Finland is Novia University of Applied Sciences.
I really like Turku because it is not a very big city but it’s a student town and there is a lot of thing to do and people to meet.
To describe myself in few words I could say that I am really clothes to my family which make this Erasmus a little bit difficult because I am able to see them only on Skype. I also like the football (a lot), to travel, to discover new people and new culture and go out with friends and talk about nothing and everything with them.
I hope we will be able to make a very good project and I am sure that it will be fun with this group =)

Maxime Portfolio

  • What do you know about the theme of your project?

The theme of the project looks very interesting. We have to analyze DIGITA (our company partner) to be able after to propose solution of innovation for them.
It also can be more efficient and fun for us if we go out the school and the other thing we are used to do to go in other place and develop another state of mind.
What do you know about the company?
- The product:
Digita design, roll out and maintain radio and television network as well as wireless data communication network all over Finland.
This service permit to the client to diffuse program on TV or Radio
                                      http://www.digita.fi/in_english
- The company
“Digita provides an important service, operating a high quality nationwide broadcast
network and we look forward to working closely with the Digita management, employees and
stakeholders to ensure the continued success and sustainable growth of Digita’s business
over the long term.”
  • What do you know about the company’s customers?

Here, we have something to explain. The company’s customers are the Radio and in this case our work is to find solution to be attractive for the radios OR the company’s customers are the people who listens the radio and in this case we have to increase the number of people who listens the radio to increase the activity of Digita?
We will talk about it with our coach to have his thinking and decide what we have to do.
  • What do you know about the industry of the company?

I have not a lot of information about the industry of the company. I have to make more research about the way of doing in Finland for this market and about the supply chain is this sector.
  • What do you know about the competitors of the company?

Thanks to the brainstorming, I know two competitors: Telemast Nordic and Anvia but for the moment it is the same as the industry. I really have to discover the market, the supply chain and the issue of this sector to have an idea of who is a threat and who is less dangerous.

Emilias portfolio

What do you know about the theme of your project?

Our organization is Digita and it is a company that’s customers are other companies so it is a b2b business. Our task is to be creative and innovative and come up with new ideas for Digita radio.

It’s a bit harder for b2b companies to use social media as a marketing tool so it will be quite interesting how we’re going to tackle that pickle.  How can a b2b business use for example Facebook as a marketing tool?

What do you know about your company?

Digita is a big company that works with a lot of well-known organizations. Digita is the leading operator in wireless network communications in Finland. Digita offers services in Broadcasting, Telecom and other Media Services.

What do you know about the company's customers?

Digita Radio works with a lot of different radio channels and some of these channels are very popular like Radio Rock, Voice, Radio Nova etc.

Here we really need to have another brainstorming section where we figure out who is the actual customer of Digita and what are the customer’s interests.

What do you know about the industry of the company?

This industry is quite new to us and no one of us had ever heard about Digita. In this industry I think you need to quite innovative and come up with new ideas constantly to keep up. The tricky part here is that another company may be Digitas “official” customer
but the end customer is a human. Here we have to think of how to attract companies in a way that helps them to get more listeners.

We also know that 3,8 million people in Finland listens to the radio for approximately 3 h per day. Even though quite many listens to the radio I think the number of people will decrees over the years when other sorts of platforms come in use.

What do you know about the competitors of the company?

One of Digitas biggest competitors in my opinion is Spotify and iTunes. In Spotify one can make their own playlist and Spotify can even create a radio station after you own music taste. I think Digitas advantages here is that their customers have speakers and news on their radio stations and that is something I think most listeners appreciate.

Service design tools

Personas
In our next meeting we really have to start creating personas – How does a typical customer look like? How many different personas can we find? We should put these personas in to different age categories and genders.

For example

17 year old boy –likes rock
17 year old girl – likes hiphop
32 year old single mom – likes RnB and listening to the news
35 old family dad – likes jazz and jokes on the radio
50 year old mom – likes Finnish music and the weather
65 year old retired man – likes the news
80 year old grandma – likes news and weather

Two other tools I would use are:

Brainstorming
I would also like to try out brainstorming with my group where everyone just says whatever pops out of their mind. We will need a big blackboard for this. No idea is a dumb idea!

Design Scenarios
This tool sounds interesting since you get to use your imagination. This could be done by having someone to draw (not me since I’m really bad at drawing) how a typical Digita scenario would look like.

See you guys tomorrow!
